Gino Rea is making ‘remarkable progress’ in his recovery from serious injuries sustained in an accident during the Suzuka 8 Hours weekend earlier this month.

Just over two weeks have passed since Rea crashed during a practice session ahead of the endurance event at the Suzuka Circuit in Japan, the Englishman suffering serious head injuries that put him in a coma for more than a week.

Having been brought around from his sedation last week, Rea is now communicating better and has now begun neuro rehabilitation.

“The last few days have been remarkable for Gino's progress,” the family wrote on Instagram.

“Communication is improving and the neuro rehabilitation has started.

“As everyone knows this kind of trauma will take time to heal but Gino's Speedy-G recovery is on the way.

“We would like to thank the hospital here in Mie, especially the doctors and nurses of the ICU unit. We would also like to thank Suzuka Circuit for their help during this time.”

Rea crashed on his own at the infamous Triangle Chicane, the same spot where Dajiro Kato lost his life during the 2003 Japanese MotoGP race.

A race winner in WorldSSP and BSB, former Moto2 rider Rea was racing in the Suzuka 8 Hours - Round 3 of the Endurance World Championship - with the FCC TSR France Honda team alongside Mike di Meglio and Josh Hook.

Despite finishing tenth in Japan, the team is still in with a shot of the EWC title at the Bol d’Or finale at Paul Ricard on 17-18 September. It is yet to announce which rider will deputise for Rea.
