Sales of motorcycles in the United Kingdom enjoyed a buoyant +14.8% increase year-on-year in June 2020 as the industry enjoyed its first full month of trading since February.

With COVID-19 having exerted its grip since lockdown was initiated in March, the industry has weathered the storm of minimal sales at a time when the market is at its peak ahead of the summer months.

With a full month of both riding and official sales under its belt now, the motorcycle  industry bounced back well with the MCIA reporting sales surging up +14.8 on the total achieved during the same month period in 2019.

Scooter sales have been the foundation for this impressive increase, growing 43.1% in its segment alone. It comes as scooters are reappraised for their role in becoming a crucial tool for key workers in the fight against coronavirus, while it has since become a safety, isolating way to get around in a post-lockdown world.

Despite missing two key months, the ‘big’ motorcycles segment enjoyed solid growth up +8% overall, the Sport/Tour sector rising a huge +69.9% year-on-year, while Custom and Trail also managed double digit increases.

In all, 12,520 units were shifted in June 2020, compared with 11.038 units in June 2019. It has also helped take the sting out of the tough to look at Year To Date figures, reducing the gap to user 25% (the difference of 1,700 units).

What were the biggest selling motorcycles in June 2020?

Having lost its crown to Yamaha over the past two months, the Honda PCX 125 returned to the top of the tree with 445 models sold in June. That meant Honda regathered the double whammy as its position atop of the major brands table continues to be untouched.

Yamaha shifted the second highest number of two-wheelers, ust holding off Triumph who had a very strong month to just miss out on second overall by 13 units.

Lexmoto held down fourth place overall from BMW, KTM, Kawasaki and Suzuki.
