Is this the all-new KTM electric scooter?
KTM's first entry into the scooter market looks to be back on with these sketches previewing what the final model could look like
KTM’s much discussed plans to move into the scooter market with an electric model appear to be gathering pace as these sketches reveal what it could look like when it hits the road
The Austrian firm has been rapidly growing its model line-up recently with a timeline peppered with fresh offerings designed for worldwide appeal to the extent that KTM will very soon have a foothold in everything from the 250cc segment right up to 900cc and beyond.
However, its most important new model could well turn out to be its smallest offering yet by not only announce its move into the urban sector but also herald the launch of its much-anticipated electric line.
KTM has already announced plans to develop a zero-exhaust emissions range – including performance-based models – in conjunction with its Indian shareholder Bajaj, with a launch date target of 2022.
That first model may be an electric scooter as previewed in these sketches submitted to Austria’s Motorrad-Magazin. Though the designs are informal rather than official, they bear all the hallmarks of what an imagined KTM scooter might look like, complete its sharp, stripped-back profile and lashing of orange-hued framing.
Indeed, the sketch could be described as a 2020-interpretation of the stillborn KTM E-Speed project, which was first shown at the 2013 Tokyo Moto Show as a concept [pictured above].
Nonetheless, the scooter is now seemingly back on the drawing board in a move that would open up a new market for one of Europe’s largest motorcycle manufacturers.
The KTM e-scooter is set to use the underpinnings of the Bajaj Chetak, which went on sale in India late last year. Before KTM though, sister company Husqvarna looks set to get its own version first after an image surfaced recently showing a scooter laden with its own recognisable traits.
As well as KTM’s expansion, Husqvarna is taking advantage of the multiple platforms available to it with its first ADV, the Norden 901, soon to be launched, followed by a 701 variant.
Meanwhile, KTM’s latest acquisition GasGas is set to get its own shot at platform sharing by diversifying its current enduro range with new road-focused models.
