Husqvarna E-Pilen electric motorcycle makes its public bow in Munich

Husqvarna has pulled the covers of its intriguing new compact electric motorcycle - the Husqvarna E-Pilen - earlier than expected with a surprise bow at this week’s Munich International Motor Show.

The urban runaround, considered to offer the approximate power of a 125cc model and rival conventionally powered models like the Honda CB 125 and Yamaha MT-125 - was on display to media and punters alongside the Vektorr electric scooter, revealed earlier this year.

Though the Swedish firm announced the new model last year and provided a sneaky teaser at the top of the year, this is the first time the model has been seen in the flesh.

Looking resplendent in Husqvarna’s signature fluro yellow and featuring familiar traits as the large circular headlight and edgy detailing, the E-Pilen has been kept fairly minimalist to disguise the heft that comes with the ever-bulky battery unit.

The E-Pilen will have three removable batteries, a feature endorsed by the decision by four major manufacturers - including Husqvarna’s parent company KTM, plus Honda, Piaggo and Yamaha - to utilise swappable battery technology across its brands for greater consumer convenience.

With a 14km/h battery, the E-Pilen is reportedly good for a range of 100km and a 10.7hp equivalent power figure.

Though it is unusual for a motorcycle company to launch its wares at a traditional four-wheel show, this year's Munch Motor Show - which replaces the Frankfurt event - is being dubbed a mobility show, with an emphasis on electric technology across two and four wheels.

The Husqvarna E-Pilen is expected to go on sale towards the start of 2022.
