Relax Folks, the Triumph ‘Thruxton’ 400 is Still Coming

First spied undergoing testing in 2023, new images show that development of the cafe racer Thruxton 400 is still taking place

The rise of the Triumph Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X has been nothing short of meteoric for the Hinckley brand. From selling a reported 10,000 bikes in its first month in India, it’s become one of the best-selling bikes in the UK market in its first year.

Naturally, Triumph is going to want to build on that success, and use the platform to launch another A2 licence contender upon the world. That bike seems to be a cafe racer version with slightly sportier dynamics than the current speed 400, and it is a machine we first saw back in January 2024, a few weeks before we’d even ridden the street and scrambler versions of the bike.

The development of the machine seems to be still ongoing, as new pictures show the new 400 being tested in India in near-production-ready form. The bike is being built alongside Triumph’s Indian partner, Bajaj, hence the bike show is being tested on the road there. And compared to the previous pictures we’ve seen, it looks like a much more finished product.

What we can see is the bike uses the same steel double cradle frame of Triumph’s existing 400s, and the suspension makes use of a centrally-mounted rear monoshock and a USD front fork. A single brake disc is used at the front, and just a bit further up from there, you will find one of the significant differences between this bike and those which share its engine, that being clip-on bars, although they are mounted above the top-clamp, and not below. That should mean the Thruxton 400, if that’s the name Triumph settles on, should have a slightly more relaxed riding position than some cafe racers.

A year has passed since the first images of the bike appeared on social media, and while we are still no closer to hearing anything official about the bike, it’s most definitely still being looked at. As for when it could launch, we are probably already too far into 2025 for it to take place this early in the year. The end of 2025, though, could be a more realistic prospect.
