Yamaha reveals new TY-E 2.0 electric trials bike for 2022 World Championship
The electric trials bike is a part of Yamaha’s 2050 carbon neutrality drive.
YAMAHA has announced the development of a new electric trials bike, the TY-E 2.0, which will compete in this year’s Trial World Championship.
The bike is designed to “provide more fun than internal combustion engines by taking advantage of the traits unique to electric vehicles, such as powerful low-down torque and strong acceleration,” according to a Yamaha press release.
Yamaha’s TY-E 2.0 is a derivative of the original TY-E that was announced in 2018, and “features a newly designed monocoque frame made of composite laminates housing an electric power unit with improved performance through a combination of mechanical parts and electronic control,” according to Yamaha.
Additionally, Yamaha says that the bike’s energy store will be in the form of a newly designed lightweight lithium-ion battery with “approximately 2.5-times the capacity of the previous model.”
As far as competition goes, the TY-E 2.0 is scheduled to take part in some Trial World Championship rounds later this year, beginning in June. Kenichi Kuroyama, the development rider of the TY-E 2.0, will ride the bike for the Yamaha Factory Racing Team in this year’s World Championship.
The TY-E 2.0 evolves from the original by employing a monocoque frame, within which the battery and power unit for the bike has been positioned lower in order to provide a lower centre of gravity; while control over the bike has been electrified with the pairing of certain mechanical components such as the clutch and flywheel with electronics that will be able to adapt to detected changes in grip.
The weight of the bike is not precisely specified, Yamaha simply quote “over 70kg”. That might not be a disaster, though, with Honda’s Montesa Cota 4RT260 Race Replica weighing in at 77kg.
Finally, the TY-E 2.0 will be on display at this year’s Tokyo Motorcycle Show from 25-27 March 2022.
The news of the TY-E 2.0 comes after Yamaha’s recent announcement of its upcoming electric scooter models, with the E01 and NEO's being recently announced, and forms part of the Yamaha Motor Group Environmental Plan 2050, which Yamaha says will see it “aiming for carbon neutrality throughout all of its business activities - including across the life cycles of its products - by 2050.”
