SADLY for MotoGP fans in Finland and around the world, the KymiRing round of the 2023 MotoGP championship has been postponed until 2023.

It’s not the most surprising news in the world, with multiple outlets citing rumours that the track renovation works at the venue were behind schedule. The circuit did hold one MotoGP test for premier class bikes 2019, although many riders, including Finnish national and four-time Moto2 winner Mika Kallio, calling for the venue to be revamped due to its ‘boring’ layout.

The circuit also drew negative comments at the recent Le Man MotoGP round, when riders were asked for their views on the venue. Its narrow and sinuous nature was forcing riders to take just a single line around parts of the course, either that or risk straying off-line and risking a high-speed crash.

The work to improve the venue was undertaken but has not been completed in time, and now with just two months to go, the venue has lost the chance to host a premier class event this year.

The full statement from Dorna reads:

The FIM, IRTA and Dorna Sports are obliged to announce changes to the 2022 FIM MotoGP World Championship calendar.

Homologation works at the KymiRing, together with the risks caused by the ongoing geopolitical situation in the region, have sadly obliged the cancellation of the Finnish Grand Prix in 2022. The current circumstances have created delays and put the ongoing work at the new circuit at risk. All parties have therefore agreed that the track’s debut must be postponed to 2023 when MotoGP looks forward to returning to Finland for the first time in four decades.

The final 2022 FIM MotoGP World Championship calendar is therefore expected to comprise 20 rounds.
