Pedro Acosta picks up ANOTHER accolade, but there’s a catch
Another accolade has headed the way of Pedro Acosta, as he picks up a further award to cap off his title winning 2023 season in the MotoGP paddock
The Triumph Triple Trophy has been awarded to Pedro Acosta for the 2023 Moto2 World Championship, ahead of the young Spaniard’s first season in MotoGP.
The Triumph Triple Trophy awards Moto2 World Championship riders points at each round of the series based on three categories: Best race progression (seven points), Pole position (six points), and Fastest race lap (five points).
Acosta mathematically won the Trophy at the third to last round of the 2023 Moto2 World Championship in Malaysia, which was the same day he won the riders’ title and proceeded to throw up in his live TV parc ferme interview - compulsive viewing.
Acosta has become the first rider to win the Triumph Triple Trophy and the Moto2 World Championship in the same year, and his reward for doing so is a Triumph Street Triple RS 765 road bike, which uses the same 765cc three-cylinder engine as Triumph supplies to Moto2 teams. The only downside for Acosta is that he does not have a road licence!
Pedro Acosta said: “I’m very happy for winning this award, at the end of the day it’s an amazing bike. I see many people enjoying riding it and maybe now is the time to get my licence so I can enjoy riding it on the road too. In the end we know it’s the same engine that we use in Moto2, and we see how fast Moto2 is. It’s going to be fun to do some stoppies and wheelies on this bike!”
Steve Sargent, Chief Product Officer at Triumph Motorcycles, said: “Congratulations Pedro on such an impressive season and being the 2023 Triumph Triple Trophy winner. It’s great to see such talent coming through on our 765 Triple and with the gap from Moto2 to MotoGP being closer than ever with the latest engine upgrades, we are excited to see how you get on in MotoGP in 2024. We hope you enjoy your prize, the brand new Street Triple RS, with its custom Triumph Triple Trophy livery and look forward to watching your progress next year."
2024 will see Acosta - now a double World Champion after his rookie year Moto3 title in 2021 - graduate to MotoGP with the Tech 3 GasGas Factory Racing team alongside Augusto Fernandez, who partnered Acosta in the Red Bull KTM Ajo team on his own way to Moto2 glory in 2022. Acosta got his first proper taste of MotoGP machinery earlier this week at the first 2024 preseason test in Valencia, in which he ended 1.2 seconds off the chart-topping pace of Aprilia’s Maverick Vinales.
