There are five preparation levels as training sessions, race results and injuries affect your rider's conditions. In Career mode, you start in Futures before progressing to Rookie in the 250SX class, then finally graduating to the Pro 450SX class and achieving glory.
A highlight is the ability to free-roam around the Compound. Explore, practice, improve your performance or create make the most of the ragdoll physics by aiming for spectacular wipeouts a la Goat Simulator. There are collectables for varying skill levels - some require stunts to collect, whilst some just need you to be able to ride in a straight line.
The Split Screen mode is a welcome new addition in Multiplayer. Race against up to three friends in Compound (with five tracks to choose from), or race players online or in the eSports series.
For the creative and skilled, you can build your perfect track with Track Editor. You can share your tracks and race on other players’ tracks.
I played on PC, and I would recommend having the recommended system requirements because the graphics are beautiful. The weather conditions create mud pits, dust clouds and water sprays.
The bikes had a satisfying weight to them and the controls were responsive. Excessively sensitive using keyboard and mouse (although that may speak to my skill level more than the game). The on/off throttle made it difficult to not crash into rocks, picnic tables and other riders. I found it much easier and much more enjoyable with a controller.
My biggest complaint is that I could not find the option to play as a woman once you’ve installed the game, so if you’re a little too trigger happy, you might be stuck as a man. Even if you do design your character to be female-presenting, they will be labelled under he/him pronouns. Not exactly ‘woke’ in 2022.
Overall, this is a fun experience game for Motocross fans and newcomers alike. Although I wonder how much has changed since the previous iteration, there is plenty to enjoy and build your skillset.
