Have your say on the new and updated version of the Highway Code

The Highways England has launched a new consultation on proposed changes to the Highway Code – and you can have your say

Have your say on the new and updated version of the Highway Code

HIGHWAYS England and the Department of Transport are in the process of updating the Highway Code, and they are asking you to take part in shaping what goes into it.

The consultation, launched on March 1st and runs until March 29th 2021, seeks to modernise the Highway Code, with respect to all matters of road use and with specific sections laid out for motorcyclists. This is separate from the consultation launched last year regarding vulnerable road users.

The work being done mainly relates to the UK’s network of high-speed dual carriageways and motorways, with smart motorways also being put under the spotlight.

While the answer your give may not affect the rollout of further stretches of the smart motorway network, they will at least help Highways England to shape the materials within the Highway Code for future drivers, and those brushing up on the rules.

Highway Code consultation launched - Smart Motorways in focus

A statement by Highways England explained:

“Among the proposed updates are explanations of the availability, appearance and safe use of emergency areas, clearer information on the use of the red X sign to close lanes and provide safer areas for those involved in incidents or where people are working on the motorway, and how road users can help keep themselves safe in the event of a breakdown or emergency.

“The guidance is also being updated on key factors that contribute to safety-related incidents, including driving while tired, unroadworthy vehicles, safe towing, tailgating and driving in roadworks.”

Highways England’s Head of Road Safety Jeremy Phillips said:

“We know more needs to be done to help motorists understand exactly how modern motorways and high-speed roads operate. The updated edition of the Highway Code will help inform the next generation of road users as well as giving important updates to those with many miles under their belt, to help us all stay safer.”
