BSB Thruxton Race 2 Results | O'Halloran doubles up as Iddon crashes out
Jason O'Halloran notches up a sixth British Superbike Championship (BSB) win of the season as main rival Christian Iddon fails to finish after a crash
Jason O’Halloran has established a commanding lead in the 2021 British Superbike Championship standings after claiming his sixth win of the season at Thruxton as main rival Christian Iddon failed to finish after a crash.
An enthralling second race of the weekend that was headlined by a breathless fight for the remaining podium positions, it was otherwise an event-free 20 laps for winner O’Halloran as he got the jump on pole man Lee Jackson to secure a lead he’d hold to the finish line.
Despite his five wins, Australian O’Halloran came into the 11th race of the 2021 BSB season a point adrift of Iddon. However, the pendulum has swung back in favour of the McAMS Yamaha rider after Iddon was the innocent victim in a collision caused by Jackson.
The pair were running third and fourth when Jackson got his braking wrong into Campbell and swiped out the Ducati man in front of him, forcing Iddon into his first DNF of the year.
Their exit, however, opened up an exhilarating tussle for second place that ebbed and flowed as the riders battled waning tyre life around the high-speed circuit.
Initially Glenn Irwin held firm as he attempted to keep up with O’Halloran but eventually slipped into the clutches of the chasing pack, headed up by an inspired Ryan Vickers.
Fresh from his career best result of fourth place in race one, Vickers shrugged off an early long lap penalty for cutting the chicane by hauling himself back into podium contention, dragging Bradley Ray with him as they both got the better of Tarran Mackenzie and Irwin.
However, when Ray - disgruntled after being baulked by Vickers when he returned to circuit from his long lap penalty - sat Vickers up on the penultimate lap to snatch second, it kick-started a chain reaction of moves over the final two laps that allowed Mackenzie back into second position, the Scotsman holding firm to complete a McAMS Yamaha 1-2.
Irwin also benefited from Ray and Vickers’ brief momentum-sapping confrontation to record his and Honda’s best result of the season, ahead of Ray, who was denied his first podium with OMG BMW in fourth.
Having done much of the hard work to drag the chasing pack into podium contention, Vickers’ race was destined to end in bitter disappointment when, having been dumped from second to fifth, he clipped the kerb at Campbell on the last lap and skidded out of the race.
That error lifted Peter Hickman into fifth place, ahead of another busy fight for what would become sixth place, Kyle Ryde emerging on top in that fight from Synetiq BMW pair Danny Buchan and Andrew Irwin, with Buildbase Suzuki duo Danny Kent and Gino Rea completing the top ten.
