CALIFORNIAN racer Tommy Aquino, 21, has died in a motocross accident in California.

Aquino, a successful AMA racer, was well-known in the British Superbike paddock where he was competing for the first time in 2013 in the Superstock 1000 class on a Kawasaki ZX-10R. He was competitive all season, scoring an impressive first win at Cadwell Park.

Details of the accident are vague but it's thought Aquino had a head-on collision with another rider. Aquino passed away at the scene while the other rider was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

A post on his British Superstock team's Facebook page said: “It is with massive regret that we confirm the extremely sad passing of our friend and rider Tommy Aquino. Tommy was a great asset to our Team and a welcome addition to my family. Tommy was enjoying a day with his father ‘Tom’ and Friend and became involved in a freak accident! The thoughts of all our Team members, sponsors and friends are with Tom, Carrie [mother] and Michael [brother] as this tragic loss is shared.”

Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this very sad time.
