The former MotoGP and WorldSBK rider, Anthony Gobert, has died at the age of 48, shortly after it was announced that he was in palliative care
Anthony Gobert, the Australian former MotoGP and World Superbike rider, has died aged 48.
The news was broken by his mother, Suzanne Gobert, on Facebook earlier today (17 January 2024).
Ms. Gobert’s Facebook post read: “My heart is breaking as I write this as my first born beautiful son Anthony has passed late this afternoon. I loved him from the moment he was born until the day I die.
“At times he was challenging to say the least but he always had a kind heart and cared for everyone. Sadly he was a victim of addiction which runs deeply in our families. He tried many times to get better but he couldn’t quite make it. I am so proud of him and thank all those good people who added to his life.”
The news of Anthony Gobert’s death came around one week after it was communicated by members of his family, including his brother Aaron, that he was receiving palliative care, and in the final stages of his life.
By motorcycle racing fans, Anthony Gobert will be remembered particularly for his time in the World Superbike Championship, during which he amassed eight wins and 16 podiums, achieving a best championship finish of fourth in 1995 with Kawasaki.
Gobert made a name for himself racing in Motocross and Supercross, and quickly became known for his hard riding and incredible speed. This career led him to leave the dirt and take to the tracks, and it was a wild card at his home Superbike World Championship round at Philip Island in 1994 that saw him make his name on the global stage - he managed a pole position, a win and a third place racing under the Anthony Gobert Racing banner.
All at Visordown extend our condolences to the family and friends of Anthony Gobert at this difficult time.
