Dominique Aegerter earns Suzuki MotoGP test after MotoE title win
Dominique Aegerter wraps up the 2022 MotoE World Cup at Misano and earns himself a run on the Suzuki GSX-RR MotoGP bike during Tuesday's test
Dominique Aegerter will get a few laps aboard the factory Suzuki GSX-RR MotoGP bike during Tuesday’s in-season test at Misano, just two days after wrapping up the 2022 MotoE World Cup title.
The Swiss rider - who is dovetailing commitments in MotoE with a full season in the WorldSSP Championship - clinched the title for the IntactGP team during the first of two MotoE races at Misano
Runner-up to Jordi Torres in 2021, Aegerter was favourite to go one better in 2022 with a string of strong results during the first half of the year.
Indeed, while he was pushed hard by Eric Granado - who won five races to his rival’s three - Aegerter consolidated his campaign with greater consistency, finishing all but two races inside the top three.
Now, seemingly as a reward, Aegerter will get his first taste of MotoGP machinery with an outing on the Suzuki GSX-RR steered by Alex Rins and Joan Mir this year.
“This is big news for me and, for sure, a big opportunity - a dream to ride in the Suzuki Factory Team and test the bike. I’m super happy about it, and I want to say thank you to everyone who has made this happen.
"I also want to say thanks to my team, Ten Kate, in Supersport who have allowed me to take this chance. Riding a Factory MotoGP machine is something I’ve forever wanted to try, so I can’t wait to jump on the bike tomorrow and enjoy the opportunity.”
It marks a long journey to get to this point for Aegerter, who has enjoyed something of a career renaissance in the last couple of years at the relatively veteran age of 31-years old.
Making his GP debut in 2006 at 125GP level, the best of Aegerter’s 14 seasons in GP racing came in 2014 with a race-winning turn in the Moto2 series [above] en route to fifth overall.
However, having bid farewell to GP racing beyond MotoE, Aegerter has found immense success in WorldSSP. Running away with the 2021 WorldSSP title with ten wins, Aegerter is on course for back-to-back titles following nine wins from the first 12 races.
Misano's MotoE finale marks the final outing for the Energica Ego machine, which has served as the MotoE control motorcycle since the series' introduction in 2019. Next year will see Ducati take over with its first all-electric race bike.
