A petition has been launched in an attempt to save Wolverhampton Speedway’s future.

The petition was launched in response to the news last week that the Monmore Green, home of the famous Wolverhampton Wolves will not extend its tenancy agreement with the Wolverhampton Speedway club.

You can’t just wipe off years of proud history. Please sign the petition.

The notification of the ending of the tenancy agreement means a conclusion to almost 100 years of speedway at Monmore Green. Wolverhampton Speedway was established in 1928, and Monmore Green has been an ever-present piece of that history.

A statement from the club published last week said only: “Wolverhampton Speedway have received notification that Speedway racing will cease at Monmore Green on October 31 this year.

“The Club have been informed by Entain Group that the tenancy agreement will not be extended beyond the end of this season.

“Club bosses are devastated by the news and will be making no further comment at this stage.”

Not only is Wolverhampton Speedway looking as though it will be kicked out of its long-term home, but there have also been no announcements of alternative venues to host the club.

The petition to try to save Wolverhampton Speedway began last week with clear justifications. Wolverhampton is a city which has an unquestionable history of speedway, and is one of the most important cities in UK speedway, if not global speedway, and that history and relevance has also garnered, over time, a significant following both within and without the city.

The petition can be found on Change.org, and has 16,372 signatures at time of writing (24 April 2023).
