Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix cancelled for 2020 do to quarantine rules
The organisers of the Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix have cancelled the 54th running of the event, due to take place this month
AS was widely expected, the Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix has been cancelled after many teams and riders pulled out of this year’s event.
The main point of contention is the 14-day quarantine period that riders and teams would need to adhere to on arrival in Macau.
A statement from the Macau GP organisers reads:
"The Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix will not take place this year.
"Having successfully contained the Covid-19 outbreak in Macau, many riders subsequently reconsidered their willingness to compete in view of the prevailing prevention regulations, making running the Far East classic this year unworkable."
Michael Rutter, one of the stars of the event, spoke about the issues facing the teams last month in an interview with TDM-Radio in Macau. “Quarantine is a big problem for our team. I’m afraid that if the quarantine period is that long, we won’t be able to go,” Rutter said. “Hopefully things will change but if not, we have next year.” He said.
While the motorcycles won’t be on track, it’s thought that the four-wheeled entrants will still be taking to the iconic road course. The racing is due to begin on the 20th and running until the 22nd of November.
